There has been a familiar refrain over the years here in Canada that our startups have less access to capital than our peers in the US. That message is supported by facts. On average, our startups do in fact have significantly less capital (3 – 10x in some cases) then US peers.
I spent a couple of days last week at the Canadian Venture Capital Association’s annual conference. Pretty much every fund in the country was there. Perhaps it was the perfect Montreal weather, but the mood at the conference was very positive. Weather aside, there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about VC in Canada – and we have a great opportunity ahead of us – IF we play it right.
I just got back from the inaugural Grow Conference in beautiful Vancouver. It was a great event. Congrats to Debbie and her team.
This event was very much geared towards web entrepreneurs. As a result, probably 1/2 of my clients and portfolio were there along with every investor I know that invests in web startups.
The highlight for everyone was definitely day 1 where selected entrepreneurs got dedicated time to talk about their products and companies with some of the Valley’s top angels and VCs. Day 2 was cool. Loved Leonard Brody‘s speech. Will post a video of it when I find it.
I am very pleased to announce that I will be speaking at this year’s edition of Mesh, May 18 + 19 in Toronto. If you are thinking about raising capital for your startup or project but don’t know where to start, then come to my workshop on day 2 where I will walk people through the process. Starting with whether you need capital, which types of businesses are best suited to outside capital and then walking through the process from getting investor-ready, pitching investors, closing the deal, etc.
Kristine Matulis will also be joining the discussion to talk about the key investor documents (exec summary and pitch) and how to deliver what investors are looking for.
As you can see from the schedule, there are some really great speakers, so if you have not already done so, register and come join us next month in T dot oh!
You can sign up here.
